Hate: between ideology and violence
HIDDEN BEHIND TWO FACES
Hate in United States is hidden behind two faces. It has a physical and more readable manifestation through hate crimes, which are reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) since 1990, but it has also an ideological space of diffusion, through the organization of hate groups, which are controlled annually by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
THE SHARED SOURCE OF HATE
In order to classify and define two different datasets we identified four main categories: Race, Religion, LGBT and Other. In the alluvial diagram we can observe the connection of the two different forms of hate (hate crimes and hate groups) with the categories to which they belong. It is immediately evident that race is the predominant one. Moreover, the diagram displays that the category of race is more prevailing in hate groups than in hate crimes.
THE NEW SHADES OF UNITED STATES
In the map below, the dimension of each state is given by the amount of hate crimes of every state, while the intensity of the colour represents the numerical value of the hate crimes per capita. On the left we can see the total amount of hate groups in United States and selecting a specific state on the map is possible to visualize the groups state by state.
US HATE: A CLOSER VIEW ON ITS PAST
We have so far analyzed the state of the situation in 2015 and 2016, but in recent years the landscape has changed dramatically. From the growth of historical groups to the birth of different groups and brand new categories adapting to new social realities, from the increase in anti-black crimes to the reaction of pro-black groups, this is how hate spread over the last 16 years.
OPPOSITE PATH THROUGH THE DECADE
If we take a step backwards and we look at the situation from a broader perspective, it will be clear how hate is changing its skin. The substance is remaining the same, but a shape transformation can be the sign of the pervasiveness of a reality with roots growing deeper than expected. This leads to the birth of new questions: where is it possible to find these roots? Are there other venting channels?
