This topic was interesting to explore in order to discover how much movies and TV series affect our perception of certain locations. The aim is to show whether fictional places are more popular than their corresponding real ones and to compare famous movies/TV seriesâ influence. A good way to answer this question is to look on the most used platform for places reviews: TripAdvisor and Yelp.
Main Findings
Through this research, we found out that TV seriesâ real locations are more known by their fictional identity created in the show rather than the real one. But when it comes to movies, itâs completely the opposite: real locations are less influenced by their fictional alter ego.
An unusual tourist attraction is Café des 2 Moulins in Paris. Because of the success of the movie Amélie, the place is full of fans. Despite its popularity, from the reviews one can notice that the food and service are poor. However, this café is never empty.
There are tourist destinations which became popular because of the movie or TV series. As for the case of Midhope Castle, in other words Lallybroch, from the TV series Outlander. Thanks to the incredible popularity of the show, the real location has gained incredible attention.
It was kind of surprising to see that despite the TV show Orange Is the New Black has had such a huge success and has a very dedicated fandom, Rosarioâs Deli Shop, which is nothing but Dimitriâs Russian market, one of the places seen in the show, hasnât had a great impact.
