When talking about related drone incidents, many people immediately think about being spied on. However, there’s a whole spectrum of accidents/incidents related to drones more than the privacy domain. The purpose of this visualization helps to organize the different types of drone-related incidents there are, and to find out what type of drone-related incidents has more news media coverage. The word “incidents” used in this case refers to drone-related, accidents, which include but not exclusively to injuries, damages to people or things. The incidents are organized by location and time. The size of the circle represents the amount of coverage.
Main Findings
Based on the research news article content, we identified 10 areas that drone incidents happen: Airports, corporate spaces, disaster areas, energy facilities, government buildings, international grounds, law enforcement & first responder facilities, private space, prisons, and public spaces.
The incidents clusters around the spring and summer months of April to August, in 2018 and 2019. The majority of incidents involve a drone flying within restricted airspace, nearly crashing into planes.
The number of news coverage increases after 2018. then it decreased after august 2018 and rose again in April 2019.
Airports have the most coverage by the news media.
