The technology used to create a Deepfake seems far out of reach, but is this true? On the internet one can find plenty of low-fi solutions, many of which can be run on a mobile phone. This protocol provides an overview of the applications in the Google Play store, how they are categorised, and which are downloaded the most.
Main Findings
Deepfake on Google Play Store is categorised as follows: photography, entertainment, social, video players and editors, tools, lifestyle, and education.
The search term Deepfake brought up mostly apps categorized as “photography”. Moreover, this is the biggest category regarding downloads, mainly due to the application FaceApp.
More than half of the applications mapped in the visualization use the word Face in their name (22).
There are two applications that target people who want to make a Deepfake based on celebrities. One of them is a voice changer, the only voice focussed result in this sample of Apps.
