Facial Recognition: Different concerns from east to west and its countermeasures

How are the attitudes different on the case of HK people tearing down the smart lamp tower (or called surveillance Tower) on Google and Baidu ?

On 24th of August 2019, protesters in Hong Kong destroyed a ā€œsmartā€ lamp post over fears that the device was equipped with facial recognition software and was being used for surveillance purposes. HK government stated that the lamp posts do not carry any facial recognition functions and images captured will not be sent to any third-party applications.We designed this protocol in order to find these different opinions.

Main Findings

All the 50 results from Baidu use the word ā€œThugsā€ to describe the people who tear down the smart lamp post. Most of the results search by Cantonese on Google describe the people who did it as ā€œ Citizensā€or ā€œProtestersā€. While all the English search results are using ā€œCitizensā€ or ā€œProtestersā€.

All 50 Results from queries ā€œHK + Surveillanceā€on Baidu were automatically replaced into ā€œHK + Smartā€. Half of the Cantonese results from Google states that the lamp has a surveillance aim but they donā€™t have evidence.
