On 24th of August 2019, protesters in Hong Kong destroyed a āsmartā lamp post over fears that the device was equipped with facial recognition software and was being used for surveillance purposes. HK government stated that the lamp posts do not carry any facial recognition functions and images captured will not be sent to any third-party applications.We designed this protocol in order to find these different opinions.
Main Findings
All the 50 results from Baidu use the word āThugsā to describe the people who tear down the smart lamp post. Most of the results search by Cantonese on Google describe the people who did it as ā Citizensāor āProtestersā. While all the English search results are using āCitizensā or āProtestersā.
All 50 Results from queries āHK + Surveillanceāon Baidu were automatically replaced into āHK + Smartā. Half of the Cantonese results from Google states that the lamp has a surveillance aim but they donāt have evidence.
