With the widespread use of face recognition technology in our daily life, the controversy and concern has been on the rise. What are the potential threats to this technology? What is the difference between east and west in the discussion of this issue?
Main Findings
Out of 40 videos selected from YouTube and Bilibili, we’ve come up with 7 categories of potential threats by facial recognition. Among them, 9 videos are smart phone related, and it also has the highest proportion of views which made the smartphone the most concerned threats caused by facial recognition.
The potential threats caused by face recognition has almost the same concerns on both platforms, but as the technology has been more widely used in people’s daily life in China, it may cause more problems there, such as home security threats associated with the widespread use of smart door locks with face recognition.
