Instagram proposes itself as an open-minded platform, but through the use of policies about sexual content, it denies its users’ freedom of expression, and it reinforces the taboos of our society. Is it so necessary to censor these types of images? People are so used to seeing such things in their everyday life that it is reasonable to question if these contents are really sensitive. Moreover, the community guidelines are rather ambiguous that the users don’t fully understand what they can post or not, which sometimes lead to removed images or blocked accounts. Therefore, the aim of this project is creating an experience that let the users know community guidelines of Instagram, highlighting the aspects that could be unclear, ambiguous or debatable.

To make the ambiguity of the policy more visible, the project uses absurdity and irony. Therefore, “Law of the Jungle” starts with a strong provocation: what would happen if the Instagram policies concerning nudity were applied to the entire animal world, not only to humans? Users adapted to the policies to survive on the platform, so how would Instagram deal with the variety of species, shapes and habits of the animal world? It’s here that the users of “Law of the Jungle” are called to take action: they have to live an experience as content moderators, helping Instagram to censor inadequate photos or to recognize explicit images of humans and other animals. The experience is a game that consists of different quizzes in which the juxtaposition of ambiguous images helps Instagram users to reflect on the Instagram community guidelines. The users, after an introductory part which explains the topic briefly, can read the Instagram policy about sexual content: it will be revealed gradually throughout the game, which consists of eight tasks, two for each theme found in the guidelines, with a series of images to censor. At the end of the game, the users receive a profile based on their total score, which ironically identifies their moderator’s abilities in the entire animal world. After this, the website shows the whole analyzed Instagram policy with a few lines of reflection and an archive with all the photos of the game that would have been censored by Instagram.
