Description

Posters communicate a lot about the imaginary of the films and that’s why we chose to study it as much as we can. We decided to underline the components of the posters; horizontally you find the elements and then all the posters that fit in it, you can then see the evolution of al the elements from 1916 to 2015. (The first film were excluded because it doesn’t have a poster.) The original cover is seen down the visualization.

You can see for example that the idea of “martians” have changed a lot its “form” over the years as well as the conception of “astronaut” that didn’t exist in the first movies. The place that took the elements are also interesting, indeed, the category “human” becomes more and more important.

Protocol

We first took the 28 movies from the first step, the first film “A trip to Mars, 1910” were excluded because it doesn’t have a proper cover. We then study the universe of the posters and categorize it by hand: human, Mars, Martian, planet, ship and astronaut. With the help of Photoshop, we realized assembly to highlight those elements and analyzed its place taken inside the image. To do that, we took the number of pixels of those elements over the total pixels found in the image (the function Histogram from PS was used). After completing a sheet with all the data, we used it to make a gauge that represents the importance (the percentage) of each element in the image.

Data source: IMDb , Photoshop

This data regroups the categories and the place of different elements of each poster. It’s organized by name of the film, the total pixel of the image and finally the different elements that composed it (divided by tag and number of pixel).
