If you pose with the American flag you are sending the message that you are a patriot. This is a subtle technique also known as an association or false connection. Such use of symbols becomes propaganda when they are used to influence public opinion.
Propagandist often relies on the evocative power of symbols and the possibility of transferring one concept to their cause. When a politician is photographed in front of the Lincoln Memorial, the aura of the U.S. government is transferred to her/him, giving the idea that he or she will follow the footsteps of the great leaders of the past.
This tactic uses a high level of semiotics to carry the authority or the ideology of the cause endorsed relinking it to conventional and evocative objects/events that are synonymous of unconditioned trust and faith. Such use of symbols becomes propaganda when those signs are used to influence public opinion. This is a subtle technique also known as an association or false connection.
[IMG BELOW] Even if the transfer could be positive or negative, in these examples is negative: foreign militarism (poster) and communism (meme) are respectively associated with a violent ape and a virus.
