In this section, we want to go deeper to see how the Chinese reader and American reader respond to the climate change book. We have analyzed one book’s reader comments - An Inconvenient Truth, written by Al Gore. We chose to analyze this book because it is one of the most well-known books on the subject of climate change and has a lot of readers both in China and the United States.
We collected 300 book reviews in the Chinese online bookstore and the American online bookstore. First, we analyze the score that each reader gives to the book, then analyze the attitude of each review, at last we analyze the keywords under each attitude, and divide the keywords into six categories. We can see there is a significantly different on the attitude of this book between Chinese and American: more than half of Chinese review are neutral, only a few comments expressed strong opposition; half of American support the view of Al Gore, but there are still many voices of opposition in American review. Most of Chinese readers think this book has very high readability, but nearly a quarter of the American gave the book only one star. In the keywords part, we can see the proportion of each type of keywords in its attitude, and also see the common keywords of each attitude in China and America. There are lot of actors and field appeared in the reviews, and half of the keywords in Chinese review and American review are the same.
Through this part we learned that the Chinese were more receptive to the idea of the book, but emotionally neutral, while the American more or less direct to supportive attitude or opposition attitude. It means China and the United States have different attitudes towards the authenticity of climate change. However, in the discussion of this book, Chinese readers and American readers have a lot of common concerns, but there are more topics about controversy in American review, it shows that many Americans are skeptical in Gore's climate change agenda.
