The Onion core

Tor Project's main actors

Introduction

The aim of this visualization is to visualize who are the most productive coders in the Tor Project repository. This visualization shows the total Index of Activity (IoA) of every person who modified, added or deleted at least 1 file. Then it shows important personal informations about the first three coder of the Tor Project (to better understand their background).

How to read the visualization

The main object of this visualization are the histograms: they show the total IoA of the coder in the Tor repository since the start of the Tor Project; they are positionated from the most active coder (to the left) to the least active (to the right) to better see with just a glance who has the first position. It is possible to see in which sector the person works (Education, Technology or Research). Then, hovering over the first three histrograms, it is possible to receive some information about the first three coders.

How it has been done

We have downloaded all the commits done in the Tor repository (the main repository of the project) on the Tor Project repository browser on Gitweb. Then we have made an IoA for every person who worked on the repository summing up every file he or she had added, deleted or modified. In this way we have understood who were the most active coder of the repository. Then, using Google search engine, we have found precious informations about the first ten people to better understand in which sector they were working (we made an accurate research on the first three).

Findings

We have found there is a great gap between the IoA of the third coder and the fourth's one. From this we can see that there are just three people at the core of this repository, and many other helper doing less things. The majority of the first ten coders work in a Technology sector. The result is different if we analyze only the first three coder: one of them, the most productive, works in a Educational context, the other two are researchers. It is important to see that, of the three first coders, one is german and two are american (working in two very different cities).
