Best actors' activities

Introduction

We have visualized the Index of Activity (IoA) of the first three coders on a timeline from the birth of the Tor repository until the acquisition of our data. In this way is possible to see where there are spikes of activity; then we have searched on the Tor Project repository browser on Gitweb for comments on those days.

How to read the visualization

The three coder have a personal color, in this way is easy to find their contribution to the repository on the timeline. On the x-axis there is the IoA since that month (sum of IoA until this month), on the y-axis is possible to see the timeline divided in months. It is possible to see the comments the coder did after the spike of activity.

How it has been done

We have downloaded all the commits done in the Tor repository (the main repository of the project) on the Tor Project repository browser on Gitweb. Then we have made an IoA for every person who worked on the repository summing up every file he or she had added, deleted or modified on a single month. Using a line-graph is possible to identify when there is a spike of activity. Thus, it is possible to go to the Tor Project repository browser on Gitweb and read the comments to the commits founded.

Findings

Nick Mathewson and Roger Dingledine are working on the Tor code since the beginning, Karsten Loesing has started to code about five years after, but he has an higher IoA/month than the other two. It is possible to read the commit comments during spikes of productivity of the three coders: everytime a spike of productivity occurs nothing interesting happened, so this is not interesting for the research.
